The airline started its operation with 3 Douglas DC-6, 2 Douglas DC-4 and 3 Douglas DC-3, to various domestic flights and international flights destinations mostly to the east in 1961. In 1963, Syrian Arab airways begin its expansion to the destinations to the west, like Rome and Munich, London and Paris.
It launched Sud Aviation Caravelle 10B3 aircraft in 1965 and Boeing 727-200 and 747SP in 1975. Syrian Arab Airlines introduced the Tupolev Tu-134B-3 and Tupolev Tu-154M in the 1980s. In August 2006, airline purchased 3 Ilyushin Il-96-400 long-range aircrafts and 4 Tupolev Tu-204 medium-range aircrafts. The airline is wholly owned by the Syrian government and, it has 5,325 employees.
