The airline was the national flag carrier of Sierra Leone in West Africa. Sierra National Airlines used to operate scheduled domestic, regional and international services to London, Amsterdam, and Banjul. Its main base was in Freetown Lungi International Airport.
The airline ceased to operate all its flight services as well as ground services in 2006.

The airline followed the suspension of operations by Sierra Leone Airways in 1987. The airlines started services to various destinations from Freetown on May, 1990. Sierra Airlines used to provide scheduled flights between London Gatwick Airport and Lungi International Airport were started on November 2004.

The airline was supposed to fly some flights with the joint collaboration of Gold Coast Aviation in the year 2004. Sierra Airlines used to operate a Douglas DC-9 on Freetown to Liberia - Accra - Abidjan services in 2004. A Boeing 767 was launched on service to other cities in Europe in 2005.
