The airline began its first international service to the British Empire to Tokyo via Darwin and Manila with Avro Lancastrian aircraft in 1945. In 1934, QANTAS Limited and Britain's Imperial Airways formed a new company, ‘Qantas Empire Airways Limited’. The airline introduced Lockheed L-049 Constellations in 1948. In early 1954, it took over the operations of British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines (BCPA) known as ‘Southern Cross Route’.
Qantas airways launched the Boeing 707 jet airliner in 1956, the Boeing 747 in 1967 and Boeing 767-200 in 1985. The airline was privatized in March 1993. In 2007, Qantas was voted the fifth best airline in the world by research consultancy Skytrax.
