The airline was founded by the government in 1948 as Union of Burma Airways. It started air flight operations to domestic and international services in 1950.
Myanmar Airlines name was changed to ‘Burma Airways’ in December 1972 and its current name was proposed in 1989. Its international services were transferred to Myanmar Airways International, set up in 1993.
