The airline started operations with two airplanes in 1921. The airline’s main competitor was Aeromexico. In February 1929, the airline opened its first international route, with services to the United States. In August 1989 the State Government privatized Mexicana Airlines. Mexicana Airlines was wholly owned by Grupo Posadas. The aircrafts were replaced with newer A320, A319, and A318 types in 2003. It had 7,874 employees.
