It was national airline of Cyprus based in Nicosia. The airline was established in 1947 with joint venture between the Cypriot Government and BEA (British European Airways). Cyprus Airways used to serve its international flights to cover over 30 destinations in Europe and in the Middle East & the Gulf areas. Its main base was Larnaca International Airport.

The airline had started its operations from 1948 with Douglas DC-3. It is one of the major Middle East airline companies. Its IATA designator is CY.
BEA took the operation of all the Cyprus Airlines services effectively in 1958 by special arrangement. The aircraft DC-8 was involved in an international incident in February 1978.
The airline’s first jet was introduced in 1969. In 1992 it established its wholly owned charter subsidiary Eurocypria Airlines. The airline has total 1,220 employees.
