The airline started its flight operations in the same year of establishment with an aircraft Douglas DC-10s. The airline is fully owned by the Afghan government. In 1979 Ariana purchased a DC 10 to operate on its Asian and European routes. In 1993, it purchased three Boeing 727-200 from Air France. After the Terrorist attack (on 11 September), the airline began to rebuild its operation in December 2001.
Ariana starts flights to international destinations, and its first international passenger flight is in 1999 landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India.
