The airline started operations in 1973. In the year of establishment, Air Niugini used DC3 and Fokker F27 aircraft. In 1976, the airline wholly owned by the government bought out the Qantas and TAA holdings and in 1980, it acquired the Ansett shares.
In 1984 the airline purchased the Airbus A300 on lease from TAA. A Boeing 767 was acquired in August 2002, replacing the Airbus aircraft.
