On April 1969, ‘Air Jamaica limited’ was setup with the Government of Jamaica holding majority shares in the airline. During the 1970s, it expanded rapidly to so many other destinations. Long-haul services to Europe were started on April 1974.
Air Jamaica used Douglas DC-8s in 1970s, but the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and Boeing 727 jets became part of the fleet towards the end of this year. In 1992, it began the first scheduled nonstop service from Orlando to Jamaica. In 1994 the company gets privatized. Air Jamaica now celebrates 37 years of service. It had over 2,500 employees. All the services were ceased to operate in 2015.
