Adria was begun and started its operations in 1961 and it was set up as a character company with a Douglas DC-6. In 1968, Adria changed its name to Index-Adria Airways and introduced its first jet, the Douglas DC-9. In 1970, Adria was one of the most reliable charter airlines in Europe. In the 1980’s Index-Adria introduced its first scheduled flights and became a member of the International Air transport Association (IATA).
Adria’s scheduled and character flights link to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, with 40 destinations in 17 countries, mostly in Europe. International scheduled flights were added, initially to Larnaca in November 1983. Adria has its head office in Ljubljana and has representative offices in 11 European countries. By the late 1980s, and after the name change back to Adria, it purchased the first 168-seat airbus A320 Aircraft.

In March 1996, Adria completed its part-privatization process. In 1998, it purchased the three new Canadair Regional Jet 200 aircrafts and the fourth Canadair Regional Jet 200 LR aircraft in 2000. On 2002, Adria is selected as the first authorized Bombardier heavy maintenance facility for CRJ aircraft. On December 2004, Adria joins Star Alliance as a regional member.
In 2005, it purchase a fifth CRJ 200 aircraft. In 2006, the company recorded a minimal profit and transported its first annual millionth passenger. For 2007, Adria Airways is planning 9% growth in income, which should ensure the company's profitability. Its total 592 employees of whom 170 are flight crews.
