Winters in St Petersburg are chilly snowy with freezing wind. In the months of November- December the water in river Neva almost freezes up. Snowfall occurs maximum in the months between December and to March. Average snow cover in the city is approximately 24 cm. Low evapotranspiration results in high soil moisture. Annual average precipitation in the city is about 600 mm (24 in).
